Esophageal Fistula
Esophageal Fistula is an abnormal communication between the esophagus and an adjacent organ or structure, such as the trachea or bronchial tree. This abnormal connection may allow food or fluids to enter the respiratory tract and can lead to significant complications requiring specialized evaluation and management.
Symptoms may include difficulty swallowing, coughing or choking during eating or drinking, recurrent respiratory infections, chest discomfort, and weight loss, depending on the location, size, and underlying cause of the fistula.
Treatment is individualized according to the cause and anatomical characteristics of the fistula. Management may involve endoscopic intervention or surgical repair, including minimally invasive approaches in appropriately selected cases, with the aim of closing the abnormal connection, restoring esophageal function, and reducing the risk of further complications.
